Sydney-based filmmaker Tak Nakano grew up on the US, Bahrain and Japan as part of his family's expatriate life before moving to Australia when he was in Year 6. He has produced documentaries for the Tokyo and Paris Olympic Games, Tourism Australia, and commercials for major companies. We spoke with him about his Japanese side of his identity, how it is reflected in his work, and the projects that became turning points in his career. October 29 is World Ballet Day. Sydney-based ballet teacher Hanako Kitazawa has spent more than two decades helping young dancers find their feet. Sydney-based 10-year-old Kei Takusagawa has been fundraising and making donations to support underprivileged children since he was eight years old. Earlier this year, he travelled to Kenya to personally deliver football gear and funds he had helped raise. Miyako Matsui, a Japanese language teacher based on the NSW South Coast, spent her childhood moving between Japan and Australia and later worked as a junior high school English teacher in Japan. She says that experiencing both the frustration of not understanding English and the struggle of not being able to speak Japanese has ultimately become one of her greatest strengths. A parasite less than one millimetre long has the power to destroy the honey and agriculture industries. The varroa mite native to Asia has spread throughout Europe, North and South America, and parts of Africa, reducing honey production by up to 60%. In 2022, varroa made it to Australia.
